Pictured above is a typical longcoat puppy. This girl is Kimba’s litter sister as you can see there is an obvious difference between these pups from the start.
Long coated Akitas are common in a breeding between two standard coated Akitas, and are believed to be a throwback to a now extinct dog called a Karafutu dog which was introduced into Akita bloodlines years ago by the Japanese breeders.
Longcoats tend to be larger boned and bigger in general than a standard coat, although you cannot show a longcoat in the UK their temperament is known to be more affectionate, more eager to please and have more of Loving and kind disposition they tend to be less dominant and more laid back than the standard coat therefore making them an ideal family pet.
The long coated Akita usually carries approximately 3 to 4 inches more coat than a standard coated Akita. The longcoats do not blow their coats (shed) more than a standard coat, but a little extra care is required to keep their coats in good condition. The long coated Akita’s coat is very similar to that of a Samoyeds.
